This may sound like something you saw on the sitcom on television last night, but in actuality this happens to people every day. This can be quite a heartbreaking thing especially if it is something valuable such as a wedding ring. In order for you to get your valuable back, if you prefer not to use a professional residential plumber, here are a few instructions on how to remove the trap from your pipe so that you may find your ring or other object you dropped.

In order for you to retrieve your item, you will need to remove the trap from your pipe. This is really the perfect way for you to retrieve your lost item. In order for you to do this you will need a bucket, a pipe wrench, and possibly a few extra washers due to the fact that they can be damaged in the process.

The first thing you will want to do is grab a bucket. This bucket will be used to catch all of the water from the trap. You will want to place this bucket directly under the pipes. Most likely there is still water in the pipes from when you previously used it. Also, make sure not to try sticking anything down the drain, especially chemicals. Once you have dropped an item down the drain you will want to immediately turn off the water and follow the rest of these directions otherwise it may be lost forever.

Second, you will want to start loosening the two end nuts of the couplings. Sometimes you can loosen them by hand, but most likely you will need to use a pipe wrench. These end nuts will loosen a piece of the pipe under your sink. Once they are completely loose the pipe should easily come out of place. You will want to move this pipe and the end nuts to the side immediately because that is when water will start to come out of the pipe. Make sure you move the end nuts out of the way so that you do not lose them in the water or under the sink.

Once you have taken the pipe off the item that fell should either drop into the bucket with the water or you will find it sitting inside one of the pipes. While you are looking in the pipes, you should check the washers. You may as well replace any washers that may have been damaged from this process or from any other thing while you are down there. It will save you a leak later on down the road.

As you can see, it is quite simple to find an object you may have dropped down a sink, but many people are not comfortable dealing with their own plumbing.
